Wow, I can’t believe it’s February. 2019 seems to be flying past me already… just as fast as my six-month unofficial sabbatical did.

Yep. It has been 6 months, 1 week, and 2 day s since I left my corporate job. And I’m finally starting to settle into my new self-declared job as a consultant and speaker. As I spent most of those days practically allergic to anything that signaled “work,” much of my energy went into the process of shedding an old identity and stepping into a new one. And by “process,” there really wasn’t one. I just let things be and didn’t force myself to do anything I didn’t want to (i.e. work).

This idea of personal identity obviously has been a dominant theme in my personal renaissance which carried on into my TEDx Talk from November. My Talk was about creating purpose through the lens of branding. Thus, my interest crescendoed on the subject of personal branding. What’s my personal brand? What are really my values? Do my actions reflect them?

Admittedly, even as a marketing professional, thinking as a personal brand is challenging. Humans are ever-changing. Most of us probably aren’t the same as we were five years ago. Even at a cellular level, we are physically not the same today as we were yesterday. Establishing a personal brand may feel incredibly daunting, but the exercise can actually be more helpful than hurtful.

So, I finally sat my butt down with the Super Bowl streaming on my AppleTV as background noise and put my thoughts down on paper about the importance of it.

This week while on your commute, think about your personal brand. Ask yourself:

  • What are my values?

  • What are my top three qualities?

  • What am I really good at?

Then, talk to a few people you trust like a family member or a friend about it. If you’re stumped, ask them. Consider this your “market research.” You’ll really get to see how people perceive you (aka your brand).

Trying to figure out your chronotype? Yeah, me too. I have a feeling I’m a wolf, but not 100% sure yet. I think I tricked myself into faking as a lion because that’s the style every self-help, productivity book seems to talk about. Annoying.

Currently (re-)reading: Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom by Jonathan Haidt. The book questions ancient insights from the standpoint of modern psychology as we know it today. Brainy stuff without the dryness!
