Reflecting on 2017

True to my Type A personality, I started thinking about my reflections on 2017 and goal-setting for 2018 right after Thanksgiving. My early start is because I had a lot to unpack in 2017. This was the year of just the beginnings of the changes that will continue to evolve. 2018 will probably be the most challenging and scary year ever but my excitement for the potential outcomes far outweighs the former.

I spent about a solid five weeks of stewing in my thoughts and letting them come to me without structure. And I even had three individual rituals at different times over the period to deeply contemplate and purge 2017 which included writing them down on paper and burning it. Each time, I was able to gradually dig deeper and uncover something new. I also set goals during these times, but I simply just added and edited from my original ones. Although I wouldn't prescribe a specific number of weeks or days, I highly recommend people who are new to tuning into themselves to extend the time they usually spend on these exercises and see where it takes them.

As I mentioned, last year was a year of small changes to set me up for my next endeavors. Here are some of the highlights of 2017:

  1. Learned to follow my heart and block out others' thoughts and judgements.
I left my first job of six years for another one that gave me more work/life balance. And even though it was "just a job," it was still scary to leave a place that was so largely a part of my identity and when people couldn't understand why I would "throw it all away." But, with this I reclaimed my life, mind and self-esteem. Today, you can see examples of me experimenting outside of my identity as a 9-5 marketer and living confidently and more creatively.
  2. Embarked on a journey of self-discovery.
I attended Tony Robbins's Unleash the Power Within in August. Since then, I reconnected with myself in the form of childhood memories, passions and dream. I even brought a couple of them to life already (i.e. enrolling in health coaching school and launching this blog).
  3. Reconnected with old friends and met new ones who are my go-to people when I need high vibrations, a sounding board and just fun times!
I've let go of the notion of "FOMO" and instead, re-channeled my energy into spending time with those who lift me up rather than bring me down. I learned to say "no" to certain people because I have a newfound value of my time, energy and self.

These reflections are just a few of many that will take me through my dreams and goals in 2018. They are the stepping stones and connective tissue that will fuel the greater vision I have. I'll be referring back to my highlights when times get tough to ground me back into the "why" I'm doing what I'm doing in 2018. I'm so excited for what's to come!

On my next post, I'll be sharing a few of my 2018 goals :).
